NDS – Unable to load data (Solution) – How to update R4 kernel
Recently, i downloaded a lot of latest NDS games from internet and hit the following error while starting the game.
“Unable to load data. Turn the power off and reinsert the game card”
This is because my NDS R4 kernal is outdated(v1.08), can not support the latest game. After updated R4 kernel to latest version(v1.18), everything is working fine now.
Update R4 kernel manually is just a piece of cake, see following guidelines to update the R4 kernel :
1) Take out your R4 card (small card) from NDS.
2) Plug your R4 card into USB pen drive which support micro SD, (USB pen drive that you used to copy game). Your R4 file content should like this :
3) Go here http://www.r4ds.me/download/r4ds.html to download the latest R4kernal.
4) R4 Kernal file is something like “English-1.18.rar”, you need “winrar” to unzip it. please go http://www.rarsoft.com/download.htm
to download if you do not have winrar installed in your computer.
5) Unzip it, the _DS_MENU.DAT and _DS_MSHL.NDS are core files for R4 kernel.
6) Copy all the unzip kernel files above to your R4 card and REPLACE IT ALL. (Please remember backup , just in case).
7) Unplug your USB pen drive and reinsert your R4 card, enjoy your game.
Done.

my r4 was working fine until i did a system update on my DSi
since then it has not worked ,the r4 works on my DS lite
what can i do
buy a new r4 card ver 1.4.1 thats all you can do for now ,nintendo has blocked the r4 ver1.4 with their newest firmware and please do not upgrade your system when using homebrew applications that is standard rule!
Hi, I recently borrowed my friend’s r4 and it irks just fine.
I formatted my sd card how it should be,
but when I choose the game I want, the screen goes white.
It doesn’t load it just stays white until I turn it off.
Can anyone help me?

Hi – I have tried doing exaclty this, but when I turn on the DS I get a purple and black striped screen and it wont load. I took it all off and put the old files back on and it worked, but wont play new games. I’ve retried it a few times but still get the stripes. I have the 4 files that look exactly like the screen shot above and it still wont work?? Thanks in advance!

change the nds system date to the year 2008 reset your system and try again it should work just fine again.

hello all , i need your help please got myself a r4 card and went and got a sandisk sd card copied over the info from me sons r4 and dont work , also tried a couple of updated files from the internet but just keep getting a red box in the top screen and ? menu in it please help im going mad. thanks

Stupid me updated system, didnt think while doin it then but a newish game on now it wont work, so i reformat card and updated the kernel, put it in dsi with no games still dunt work so i know i need the lastest kernel, which ther int yet or i think i need to buy a diff card, i just ant gotta clue……arghgghghgh doin me nut in lol!!

I hope some one can help me because I’ve been really frustrate for the past hour or so.
My r4i card has been working fine, until recently when I wanted to get some new games and delete old ones, so I started fresh. I deleted everything on the SD card and formatted it properly and everything. I downloaded the proper kernel and everything. But when I tried to play my games all that comes up is a white screen with an icon of a ?menu in red. Im extremely confused because I’m not sure what I did wrong and I’ve done this correctly before..

hey cj i can help with ur promblem if u have a r4card wat u do is take it out sent the date on ur ds to the day it started to say error then turn ur ds off and turn bck on and it should work.

HI please can anyone help me. I copied games (all the files) from a friends R4 to my PC.
Then I formated my R4 card and copied the files (games) from my PC to the R4 card.
Keeps on loading and goes no where. Did push the R4 card to ppop out and then the DS told me could find _DS_MENU.DAT. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!11

When I replaced it, and inserted again into my nds and turned on ,the data was loading. And I wait but no respond. What is my mistake?
I always recommend http://www.dsttcard.net to buy a dstti. They also have the most up to date dstti dsi kernels. Have a fantastic day keep up the good work!

I’ve finally got the R4 update to work, but the new games won’t work! One freezs on me and one keeps on saying there’s a corrupted file…press A to delete it…
Even after I press A, the same error shows up.
Lifesaver! I have been downloading games to my R4 and it wouldnt load them, kept saying something about the save data! turns out it was the software update that was needed afterall, my DS works a treat again, lots of new games just in time for my holiday!
We shall see. I’m a huge fan of the series and fell in love very quickly with the show.
How do you unzip files on winRAR? I have winrar (i think) but how do you unzip it? GAH
I have an R4 card that i bought back in Jan10. I have downloaded games and everything has worked ok until now. The games I have just downloaded look as though they are loading when I switch on the ds then the screen goes black and nothing happens
I replaced the old files with the new R4 files, but when I turn on my DS, an R4 picture comes up imediately, I don’t even get to the menu! I don’t know what went wrong! Can you please help me!!!
Hi CK, you havent got all the correct files on your sd card, you should go to the official r4 site and download the latest software as your missing the menu file.
There is a new firmware out for the R4 DS Card,it’s called WOOD R4 and I believe it is at version 1.08 right now. It fixes all of the problems with the (now) outdated original R4 DS firmware. So I suggest everyone to download the Wood R4 firmware as it adds support for all of the newest files!
I’ve downloaded the Firmware thingy and I the new R4 update, but My DS still won’t work!!!! The screen still shows some words that says something about the software… Help!!!!
Please, help me. My R4 DS card was working fine. However, I downloaded the game Mario and Luigi Partners in Time and when I tried to play it, the DS stopped working. I restarted it, but now it won’t read the contents of the R4. The option to open the R4 appears on the screen, but when I click on it the screen flashes once, very quickly, and then both screens get white blank and freezes.
Do you think the game Mario and Luigi has some component that damaged my DS console?? I’ve tried everything I could: formatted the micro SD, formatted the DS itself, but nothing works.
Please, help me.
this is crazy. my friend bought my r4 card and put the right stuff on it and it worked fine for 1 day then it wouldn’t load and i couldn’t put it on the computer, it wouldn’t read it. what to do???!
Tyler, it may be a case of a defective card, or worse, a cloned R4 DS, there are sadly a lot of them out there, cheap knock offs of the original R4 Card and they are made with horrible quality, both on the inside as well as the outside! I would contact the seller you purchased from and ask for an exchange as the card should work for years and years, not just 1 day.
The other thing that may have happened is that your microSD card got corrupted. This could be due to a knock off, or could be that the microSD card was defective. Try to reformat the microSD card again to see if it makes a difference.

The guy at the store I bought it from use to put the games on the R4 for me but im tired of paying him the money and I could do this myself. So I was wondering how do I download games and which websites are the best, cuz I tried a couple yet I don’t know why it don’t work for me oh and I have the device that u put the micro sd in, in order to download the games to put into the ds…ugh im soooo lost I don’t understand nothing so please can some one help me im not that slow to understand once some one explains to me..hehe
Just go to the following site: warez-bb.org and register. Than search for nds roms or the name of a game. You’ll get links to rapidshare.com or other download sites. Download the game and play

hi hope someone can help me here! i just got my r4 sdhc card (A REAL ONE) and a kingston 4gb micro sdhc.i’ve downloaded the 1.55 kernel on the site that they reffer on the box.the problem is nothing works.extracted the files,copied them to the microchip,created a separate folder for games,all that must be done and nothing works. when i turn on my ds it says AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED.PRESS AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON TO TURN OFF THE SYSTEM even tried different kernels and still nothing.is there anyone out there that can help me with this i’m stuck in a dead end and dont know what to do anymore.thanx in advance!!

Hi All. i have bought many R4 and R4i cards that have all worked with no problems…. until recently i was sent a R4i SDHC Christmas version. the latest kernel for it is 1.14b so i cannot get all games to work, secondly it does not have the function to connect and update the kernel over the wifi. after much searching on the web i cannot find a later kernel anywhere, can somebody shed any light or perhaps point me in the right direction as its driving me crazy. any help would be greatly appreciated. regards Russ

hope you can help I have been using my R4 with no hassles but after adding two games I got the following error message “System date error! Please check NDS system date.” I have checked the date on my nintendo and its correct, have also reformatted my SD card and reinstalled R4 programs Moons? etc and put al game on but ag it still comes up with this error hope you can help cos if you do you will put a big smile on a little girls face and I can stop being frustrated many thanks Nic

I have two R4 cards for my two boys, and they have both come up with the same message today, they worked fine yesterday. I have not even added any new games or anything, they have also been checked on 3 machines and get the same error message.
Try setting the date to one year earlier. It works fine then!

hi thanks for that found the cure as you described but had to change the date a few times before it worked again I just took a day off until I got it to work but had to put a date on to get my second nds to work

Hi,
I had the same problem with ” system date error, please check NDS system date”. This happened on 17th April 2010.
I changed the NDS system date back to 10th April 2010 and the R4i now works again.

You need to download the latest kernel. The one that causes the date error onpy goes up to April 14th of this year. The sites should have all updated them by now. I had this problem and so did the kids consoles. After downloading the latest kernel, they are working great on today’s date.
